PlayStation is giving away Uncharted Collection and Journey for free
Play At Home initiative also includes $10 million indie support fund
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced Play At Home, a new initiative designed to promote social distancing and aid indie game developers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Play At Home initiative will offer two free games for all players, while a $10 million indie support fund will help creators who may be struggling in the current climate.
From April 15 at 8pm PDT until May 5, 2020 at 8pm PDT, players can download Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey free of charge to keep forever. Knack 2 will be available instead of Uncharted in Germany and China.
“Independent developers are vital to the heart and soul of the gaming community and we understand the hardships and financial struggles that many smaller gaming studios are facing,” SIE president Jim Ryan wrote on the PlayStation Blog.
“With that, SIE has developed a fund to support them during this time. We have earmarked $10 million to support our independent development partners. More information about the fund, including participation criteria, will be made available soon.
“During these days of physical distancing, fans have turned to gaming for moments of respite and enjoyment,” Ryan added. “At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we are privileged to bring this much-needed entertainment. We know this is just one small step and we are thankful to be able to offer this support to our players, our communities, and our partners.”
PlayStation recently confirmed that it has slowed download speeds in the US and Europe in a bid to reduce demand caused by people staying at home due to the coronavirus.
