Cyberpunk 2077 will return to the PlayStation Store on June 21
But Sony warns players they will still encounter issues with the PS4 edition
Cyberpunk 2077 will be available to purchase on the PlayStation Store again beginning on June 21, 2021.
In a statement released on Tuesday, CD Projekt confirmed Sony had approved the game for sale on the platform holder’s online marketplace.
However, Sony has also warned players that they will still encounter issues with the game when played on the base PS4 console.
“Users will continue to experience performance issues with the PS4 edition while CD Projekt Red continues to improve stability across all platforms,” the company told Axios. “[PlayStation management] recommends playing the title on PS4 Pro or PS5 for the best experience.”
Microsoft has been selling the game online with a similar warning message, and it is possible the product will also be accompanied by one when it returns to the PlayStation Store.
Cyberpunk 2077 has been unavailable on the PlayStation Store since December 17, 2020.
Following three delays, the highly anticipated RPG released on December 10 with a host of technical problems, most notably on PS4 and Xbox One, resulting in the title being pulled entirely from the PlayStation Store a week after its release.
At the time, CD Projekt pledged to improve the title with future patches—it said March 2021’s 1.2 update included over 500 improvements—but also said customers not wanting to keep the game could opt for a refund.
In May, over five months after Sony had delisted the game, CD Projekt said it was still awaiting the platform holder’s approval to bring Cyberpunk 2077 back to the PlayStation Store.
CEO Adam Kiciński told shareholders: “We are still in discussions and with every patch the game gets better and there is a visible progress, but as we said the decision is an exclusive decision of Sony, so we are waiting for the information about the fact that they took the decision to bring back this game.”
Asked about the same situation in late March, CD Projekt’s SVP of business development, Michał Nowakowski, also said Cyberpunk 2077’s absence from Sony’s digital storefront was possibly hurting sales across all platforms.
Asked to provide an updated sales forecast for the game, he didn’t offer a figure, but said sales would be heavily impacted by two major factors – the game’s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S release in the second half of the year, and its return to the PlayStation Store.
“As far as Cyberpunk sales for this year are concerned, first of all I believe they will be driven by two major elements that we keep working on. First, patching and updating the game, and this should also result in coming back to the Sony store,” Nowakowski said.
“Obviously, Sony’s decision is much awaited by many gamers and we believe it may also influence purchasing decisions of not only those playing on PlayStation but also on other platforms, so this is important to us.”
Earlier this week, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan commented for the first time on Cyberpunk 2077’s removal from the PlayStation Store.
“This was a tough decision for us to make, but ultimately, we had to act in the interests of the PlayStation Community, and not knowingly sell a game that might result in a bad experience for them,” he told Axios.
